Why domes

Why We Chose Geodesic Domes Over Box-Shaped Homes
At Open Source Town, we’ve made a deliberate decision to use single-level, sound- and temperature-insulated geodesic domes as our standard for family housing. This choice might seem unconventional at first glance — but there’s good reason behind it.

Form Follows Function
Geodesic domes are not just visually striking — they are structurally efficient, using fewer materials to enclose more space. The spherical form distributes stress evenly, making the dome extremely strong and stable, even in extreme weather conditions.

Natural Comfort, Lower Energy Use
Thanks to their shape, domes are thermally efficient. Warm air circulates gently rather than becoming trapped in corners. With high-performance insulation added to the structure, our domes maintain stable indoor temperatures with minimal energy input — keeping heating and cooling costs low.

Peace and Privacy
All our dome homes will be engineered for advanced sound insulation. Inside, you’ll find acoustics that support quiet, focused work and rest — something that traditional homes often struggle to provide in dense community environments.

Accessibility and Equality
We will build our domes as single-level units, making them accessible to people of all ages and physical abilities. This also simplifies construction and future maintenance — and supports a town design that avoids vertical hierarchies, both literally and socially.

A Gentle Footprint
Domes integrate more naturally into green landscapes than large rectangular buildings. Their smaller foundation footprint preserves more topsoil, allows better rainwater absorption, and reduces impact on local ecosystems.

Designed for Mindful Living
Living in a dome is a different experience — not just in terms of space, but in how it encourages a different rhythm of life. Many report feeling more centered, focused, and grounded in dome-shaped spaces, free from the straight lines and sharp angles of industrial modern housing.

Built for the Future
We will be developing open-source, modular dome kits that allow local fabrication, easy repair, and long-term upgradeability. Whether it’s installing new insulation, integrating solar shading, or adapting to new family needs, dome homes give us flexibility without the waste of demolition or major reconstruction.

In short: we choose domes because they serve people and the planet better than conventional box homes — offering durability, comfort, beauty, and flexibility in a compact and climate-resilient form.
